Sue Paulsen with her collection of works at Noordhoek Art Point.

We’re thrilled to present Sue Paulsen as our featured artist for the month of August.

Sue embarked on her painting journey at the age of 50, finally heeding the call of her creative soul. With a background in knitwear design, Sue’s innate understanding of colour serves as a solid foundation for her artistic endeavours.

Her artistic exploration began with short courses in oil painting, honing her skills under the guidance of Almarie Williams and Natalie Hirshmann. Her preferred medium remains oils, yet she also finds joy in drawing and experimenting with various print methods.

My inspiration comes from my home and surroundings, often inspired by the seasons and the flowers as well as beautiful old treasured items that evoke memories from our past,” says Sue.

A celebration of simplicity

Nestled in her small studio at home in Bergvliet, Cape Town, Sue paints from life, often choosing deceptively simple compositions which in turn highlight the sheer beauty of her chosen subject. It’s no wonder then that her works are often described as quiet and peaceful. Her works beckon viewers into tranquil scenes, enveloping them in a sense of serenity and calm. Her paintings, infused with a sense of warmth and authenticity, emanate a timeless appeal that resonates deeply with art enthusiasts and collectors alike.

Art accolades

Sue’s artistic achievements include numerous Highly Commended and Commended awards bestowed by the South African Society of Artists. Her talent even earned her a spot as a finalist in The Artist magazine’s cover competition in 2020. As testament to her prowess, Sue has been commissioned by renowned retail brand @home for bespoke artworks. Her pieces have found homes in collections across the globe.

Beyond her artistic pursuits, Sue has also played a significant role in fostering creativity within the art community, serving as Chair of the Constantiaberg Art Society from 2017 to 2022.
